Panavia Aircraft GmbH
Panavia Aircraft GmbH is a multinational aerospace consortium formed to design,
develop, and produce the Panavia Tornado, a multirole combat aircraft. The
company’s establishment was a significant milestone in European defence
collaboration, reflecting the need for joint ventures to share the costs and
expertise required for advanced military aviation projects.
Established: March 29, 1969.
Founding Members:
- United Kingdom: British Aircraft Corporation (BAC, later
merged into British Aerospace, now BAE Systems)
- Germany: Messerschmitt-Bölkow-Blohm (MBB, now part of
Airbus)
- Italy: Aeritalia (later part of Alenia Aeronautica, now
Leonardo)
The consortium was formed under a tripartite agreement between the UK, Germany,
and Italy to develop a new combat aircraft capable of fulfilling multiple roles,
including interdiction, reconnaissance, and air superiority.
